An ancient ceramic village in Hoi An

Located in the city of Hoi An in central Quang Nam province, the ancient ceramic village of Thanh Ha has existed for more than 500 years, and has well upheld its traditional craft of making ceramics.

In the 15th century, artisans from Thanh Hoa province settled in Hoi An and established the village. They practiced their traditional craft and handed it down to the present-day potters.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the craft flourished together with the rapid development of Hoi An, providing ceramic products to the whole central region.

Thanh Ha ceramics and other crafts, such as Kim Bong wood making, Cam Kim mat making and Tra Que vegetable growing, have contributed to the creation of a series of craft villages around Hoi An city.

Ceramic products of different shapes and sizes are produced in Thanh Ha, including pots, bowls, vases, cups, jars, bricks, tiles, and other things of artistic values.

Currently, about 20 local households are engaged in making ceramics, which are renowned for their unique features, distinctive characteristics, and special colors as they are manually made and burned in kilns.

An Giang hosts Khmer sport, cultural festival

An ethnic Khmer cultural, sports and tourism festival will open in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang tomorrow, organisers have announced.

The five-day festival, held at the Xuan Bien Industrial Park in Tinh Bien District, will highlight a variety of cultural activities including long-boat races, fashion shows of traditional Khmer costumes, traditional food, exhibitions and cross-border cultural exchanges. Cultural and scientific seminars will also be part of the event that is held every three years.

Ho Viet Hiep, Deputy Chairman of An Giang People's Committee, head of the organising board, said organising the festival in a border district like Tinh Bien will help attract large groups of Khmer people from Cambodia to the festival.

He said the annual ox race, a traditional event of the Khmer people in the Mekong Delta provinces of Vietnam, will be one of the highlights of the event.

Local companies will display their products at 50 booths while Cambodian firms will display theirs at 15 other booths at the festival, Hiep said.
